Behind the Lens: Gretl Watson-Blazewicz
Head of Photography at Australian Fashion Labels, Gretl Watson-Blazewicz jumps in front of the camera for this month’s BNKR editorial. We talk to Gretl about all things photographic, dream shoots and her Instagram famous furry friend. Birth place: Adelaide, Australia Current location: Adelaide, Australia Instagram: @gretlwb
BNKR: What’s the best part of a shoot day? Gretl: When you know that you have captured a particular moment – a face, a pose, expression, lighting. When it all comes together harmoniously and you know you have achieved what you were angling for.
Where’s the strangest location you’ve ever been for a shoot? There’s been many! We have shot on vast salt fields, in a paddling pool, fine dining restaurants and just recently on a squash court. The greatest part is how willing and helpful people are when you ask to use their premises for a location.
As a photographer - who’s work do you admire? Because I work with many different brands, I search for inspiration across a whole variety of photographers who each capture different styles and moods. I am personally a big fan of Wolfgang Tillmans, Viviane Sassen and Miles Aldridge. Just to list a few!
Did you study with photography in mind - or did something inspire you along the way? I graduated in Graphic Design back in 2009, and since then I went on to work as a graphic designer/photo editor for Australian Fashion Labels. In 2011, I started at the BNKR online store. Through this I became obsessed with photography and was asked if I would like to be the photographer for all our brands. I was then provided with one on one tutoring in the technicalities of photography with Gregory Ackland, who is head of photography and digital media at the Adelaide College of the Arts.
The first photograph you ever took… Professionally it would have been a lookbook photo for Keepsake - when the photographer had to use the bathroom I stepped in for one shot! Back in my youth I remember really enjoying using the disposable cameras and would even set up my toys and make them pose, school photo style.
We hear you’ve got a famous pet that sneaks his way into most of your shoots. Tell us about Ferris… Ferris is my pet mini lop bunny. He is just over a year old and is just so cute, well behaved and perfect! Everyone has tolerated me bringing him to work everyday, and he even has free rein of the office courtyard. He does bring a good de-stressing distraction to our work environment, enjoying endless cuddles and attention.
If you could do an editorial with anyone in the world, who would it be? There are a few amazing models who would be unbelievable to work with – I have always been a fan of Abbey Lee Kershaw, she sort of looks like she’s from a nymph like fantasy world.
