Want Glowing Skin In Winter? Our Office Experts Tell You How

You guys, I've been scared to try eye cream, let alone overhauled my skincare routine with a change of seasons. I've used the same drug store moisturiser for the last five years. That was until I met Glossier Super Bounce. My poor, patchy, dried-out-from-winter-winds skin was overhauled after, legit, one use. It had literally never felt softer.

And then I was emboldened. The Ordinary Advanced Retinoid joined the family. I even bought an eye cream. As well as making me feel like I was doing real adult things (like taking care of myself), I saw a real time improvement in my skin - even after being at the mercy of the office air con's hot/cold rollercoaster every day.

Winter is hard enough without your skin turning on you too. Our BNKR HQ babes share their secrets for killer skin when the chill sets in, from two step to 10 step, and without handing over half your monthly pay.

What's your skincare style?

Really minimal - I haven't had to do much for my skin up until recently. I now use Sunday Riley Ceramic Slip Cleanser once a day.

What are your go-to products during winter?

During winter I use Palmers Facial Perfecting Oil before bed to put moisture back into my skin.

Do your skincare habits change from summer to winter?

The only thing I do differently during summer is be more conscientious about sunscreen. With my pale complexion it's an everyday necessity when the sun is out.

Jazz, Head Stylist

What's your skincare style?

My skincare regime is definitely regimented. Morning and night with whatever makeup and skincare guru Isabella Iasenzenario tells me to use. I use different masks all the time, but oils, cleansers and moisturisers are constant for six months or so.

What are your go-to products during winter?

Definitely the Glossier Mega Greens detoxifying face mask and their Bounce serum

Do your skincare habits change from summer to winter?

Mine don’t usually change that much except for I tend to moisturise more in summer when I get a little too much sun. I also don’t wear makeup as often, so there’s no need to remove makeup as the first step!

What's your skincare style?

I would say excessive/always trying new things. I am an absolute sucker for anything new on the market or that is trending in the skincare cult world. Whether it be adopting a 12 step skin care routine from Korea, spending most of my weekly pay on a Clarisonic or using a jade roller, I’m THAT girl. I blame it all on my job and see it as ‘knowledge + education'. I'm currently fan-girling over Glossier – but who isn’t? I have all the things.

What are your go-to products during winter?

Where do I begin? I always double cleanse, especially in winter. I start with Kiehl's Midnight Recovery Botanical Cleansing Oil first to remove any dirt and makeup, and then I follow with a foam based cleanser like Kiehl's Ultra Facial Cleanser. A lot of people think oil-based cleansers are only good for dry skin and are scared to use them because there is this fear that it will only lead to breakouts – wrong! Oil is attracted to oil, it will help draw those oils out! Just follow with a mild cleanser afterwards. I also use my Clarisonic in conjunction with my cleansing routine about three times a week. You've got to cleanse morning and night, and I'll probably cringe if you leave your makeup on at night (maybe we can’t be friends).

I have combination skin, but in winter it can get quite dry so I like to use a exfoliant two to three times a week to really scrub away those dead skin cells. I like Dermalogica Daily Superfoliant – it has activated Binchotan Charcoal in it to help purify the skin and draw out any toxins. It also has Niacinamide in it (beauty geeks know what I’m talking about here) which guards your skin against the damaging effects of pollution. I have really only just started using a toner in the last six months and I really like it. I use Kiehls Ultra Facial Toner – it's a great price and lasts ages! It is also super mild so it’s a good one to try if you have never used a toner before or have sensitive skin.

I would then go on to use a serum (or two) and this changes for me from AM – PM (like Christina Milian). In the AM I use Glossier Super Glow directly after toning – it gives that 'lit from within' look. I then follow by using the Glossier Super Bounce – and it does just that. It plumps your skin with loads of moisture and combats dryness, plus it doesn’t leave any residue and even though its super moisturising, it never leaves my skin feeling sticky or oily. For those who want a cheaper option and/or don’t want to pay for a forwarding service (Glossier is yet to ship to Australia directly), then I suggest Buffet from The Ordinary – amazing price point and a beautiful product!

In the PM I have just started using a Retinoid by The Ordinary called Advanced Retinoid 2%. I was always scared to used a Retinol because you hear things like "they make you break out”, so to avoid these possibilities I opted for the Retinoid option - it's a better place to start if you have never used this kind of product before, or are like me, have just hit 25 and are freaking TF out.

Now let's talk moisturisers. During the AM I use Kiehls Ultra Facial Cream – this is a cult fave. It is nice and light but also gives a hydration that lasts all day. In the PM I use a thicker moisturiser, like Kiehls Pure Vitality Skin Renewing Cream, but this isn't 100% necessary. I just love the feel of them on my skin, but a lot of people don’t.

Next up? Eye cream! This is probably something I get the least amount of joy from but it’s super important. I prefer balmy or oil-based eye creams because I find them quicker to apply - one I'm currently using is the Aesop Parsley Seed Anti Oxidant Eye Serum – I really like that you can use the dropper dispenser to just apply the perfect amount and it just smoothes over the eye super easy.

Massage is key to stimulating blood flow and cell renewal. I use a jade roller to massage my moisturiser in (after using my hands). This helps improve skin tone and elasticity, promote lymphatic drainage and reduce puffiness! And they are super cheap so why not? I usually take it to the couch and use it while I watch Masterchef.

Do your skincare habits change from summer to winter?

I think it's super important to change aspects of your routine from time to time. Think of it like your exercise routine - if you don’t change it up every now and then, your body gets used to it and your results aren’t always as effective. I treat skin exactly the same. Have your staples that you absolutely love, but change your serum or your moisturiser from time to time. I have found that by doing this it keeps my skin on its toes and avoid it looking dull.

Hermela, Head of Customer Care

What's your skincare style?

Minimal and basic – Cetaphil face wash and moisturiser for oily skin twice a day, when I get up and before I sleep! Every now and then I use a stronger, more acne targeted face wash – but only when my skin is working against me!

What are your go-to products during winter?

I love my charcoal scrub – I’m really about Dark Angels Scrub by Lush and a black head exfoliator by Biore. I have super oily skin and I work out quite a bit, so I love a good scrub to clean out my pores. I try and do it once a week but life, you know?

lush dark angels cleanser

Do your skincare habits change from summer to winter?

I notice I moisturise my skin more generously in the winter; I feel a lot more tighter in the face. I also don’t blot as much as I do in the summer! I am forever blotting my face in the summer time; make-up + sweat + oily skin = sheen!

Katie, Senior Graphic Designer

What's your skincare style?

Minimal but regimented: facewash/scrub/toner/eye crème/moisturiser.

What are your go-to products during winter?

I don’t really change it up much for winter, probably should use a thicker moisturiser though!

Do your skincare habits change from summer to winter?

Nope.
